Because of, not in order that…

Posted: September 10, 2012 in Interlude (Psalms)

I was reading this morning in the Psalms and I came across this awesome reminder from David in Psalm 86 as he wrote “I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever. For great is your steadfast love toward me; you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.”

The reminder was this: our worship of God, our endeavors to glorify His name…these things should be our natural response because of God’s love for us, because He has saved us. In other words, the things we do, the people we’re becoming, should never be our attempt at earning God’s favor. We already have it. Our motivation shouldn’t be to make God love us. He loves us as much in our failure as in our fledgling success. Our lives should be a reflection of the humility, thankfulness, and joy we experience as we gain an increasingly deeper understanding of the grace that envelops us- not because we’ve merited God’s favor or our salvation, but that “while we were sinners, Christ died for us.”
